What did your last tax return miss?

Most returns leave something on the table — a credit not claimed, the wrong filing status, a deduction the software never asked about. We review a past year line by line and tell you plainly: here is what was missed, here is what it's worth, and here is whether it's still claimable.

One flat price, whatever your situation. If the return was clean, the report says so — and you'll know.

The review

What we actually look at.

Filing software is very good at arithmetic and very bad at asking the right questions. Nearly everything we find is something nobody asked you about.

01 — What was left unclaimed

Credits and deductions you qualified for.

Earned Income Credit, Child and Dependent Care, education credits, the Saver's Credit, energy improvements, student loan interest, educator expenses. Filing status too — head of household is missed constantly, and it's worth real money.

02 — Self-employment

The deductions 1099 filers skip.

Home office, mileage, phone and internet apportionment, equipment depreciation, health insurance, the deductible half of self-employment tax, retirement contributions, and the QBI deduction — which software routinely computes wrong or skips entirely.

03 — Errors that follow you

Mistakes that keep costing after the year closes.

Capital loss carryforwards that stopped being tracked, cost basis reported wrong, depreciation schedules that drifted, charitable carryovers, state returns inconsistent with the federal. These compound quietly across every later year.

Before you buy

Not every year can still pay you back.

This is the part most services won't tell you up front. Federal law gives you three years from the date you filed to claim a refund — two years from the date you paid, if that's later. After that the money is gone, however real the mistake.

Tax yearRefund still claimable?Worth reviewing?
2025, 2024, 2023Yes — the window is openYes. This is where money comes back.
2022Only if you filed on extension in October 2023 — and that window closes this monthYes, but move now.
2021 and earlierNo — closed for refundsSometimes. Carryforwards, basis and depreciation errors from a closed year still affect what you owe today, and those are fixable going forward.

If you buy a review of a closed year, we'll say so in the report and tell you exactly what's still actionable. We'd rather tell you that than take $149 for a finding you can't use.

How it works

Four steps. About a week, start to finish.

STEP 01

Pay and pick your year

$149 through Stripe. You choose which tax year you want reviewed — we go back as far as 2019.

STEP 02

Send your documents

You get a secure portal link. Upload that year's return and everything it was built from — W-2s, 1099s, mortgage interest, childcare, tuition, receipts. Never by email.

STEP 03

We go through it line by line

Every figure on the return checked against the documents behind it, then against what you were entitled to claim. Five business days from the moment your file is complete.

STEP 04

You get the report

Every finding, what each is worth, whether the year is still open, and a straight recommendation on whether amending is worth it. Clean return? The report says that.

Coming for the 2027 season

Full preparation, published and fixed.

Once IRS registration is complete we file returns too, opening with the 2026 tax year in late January 2027. Hourly billing punishes you for having a complicated year, so we quote the job instead. These are those quotes, published now so you can plan.

Straight answers

Where this practice actually stands.

New firms usually paper over this. We'd rather you know exactly what you're buying, because it changes what we can and can't do for you today.

Written security plan — in force

Tax preparers are financial institutions under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and must maintain a written information security plan. Ours is written to the IRS Publication 5708 standard, signed and in force: encrypted storage, multi-factor authentication, and no client documents over plain email.

IRS registration — in progress

Registration as a paid preparer and as an authorized e-file provider is underway for the 2027 filing season. Until both are issued we are not filing returns — which is exactly why the review below is a report and a recommendation, not a filing.

Continuing education — in progress

Eighteen hours of IRS-approved continuing education, including ethics, completing before the 2027 season under the IRS Annual Filing Season Program.

Your consent, in writing

Federal law (IRC §7216) governs what a preparer may do with your tax return information. We ask for your written consent before we use it, and we never sell or share client data.

Questions

Before you ask.

What if you don't find anything?

You still get the report, and it will say the return was clean. That is a real answer worth having — it means nobody is going to come back to you about that year. We won't invent findings to justify the fee, and we'd rather you knew that before you buy.

Do you file the amended return for me?

Not yet. IRS registration as an authorized e-file provider is still in progress, so right now the review is a report and a recommendation. Once registration completes we can prepare and file the 1040-X — that's a separate engagement, quoted at the time.

What documents do you need?

That year's filed return, and everything it was built from: W-2s, 1099s, mortgage interest, property tax, childcare, tuition, charitable receipts, business income and expenses. The more complete your file, the more we find — a return reviewed without the source documents is guesswork.

Is it safe to send you my tax return?

Through the portal, yes — it's encrypted in transit and at rest, and we maintain a written information security plan to the IRS Publication 5708 standard. Through email, no, and we won't accept documents that way. That isn't a preference; it's a legal obligation under the FTC Safeguards Rule.

Can you review more than one year?

Yes, $149 each. If you've had the same issue running for several years it's usually worth doing the open years together — a mistake in one year often repeats in the next.

What if I owe more after the review?

It happens, and we'll tell you. Finding an error that increases your tax isn't the outcome anyone wants, but knowing about it beats the IRS finding it first — penalties and interest are smaller when you come forward.
